United States & United Kingdom

A rock identifier for rockhounds and collectors.

Built for people who pick up stones — weekend rockhounding in the US, beachcombing and mineral-shop visits in the UK. Same science names. Same three free IDs a day.

Creek and stream finds

Identify a rock from a photo after a walk along a US creek or a UK stream. Quartz, basalt, sandstone, and jasper show up more often than rare gems.

Beach pebbles and garden stones

What stone is this on the shingle, or in a landscaping pile? Photograph a beach pebble or garden stone and get a shortlist instead of a guess.

Shop crystals and tumbled stones

Identify crystals from a picture — points, clusters, and tumbled stones on a shelf. Geological names first. Lore stays optional.

Built from their 1-star reviews

We read the complaints. Then we designed against them.

01

Same stone, different guess

Competitors flip names when you rotate the specimen. RockID asks for two or three angles and ranks lookalikes instead of pretending certainty.

02

Quartz called diamond

Phone photos cannot prove a rare gem. Our AI is trained for rocks, stones, and shop crystals, prefers common finds, and almost never returns diamond from a casual snap.

Method

How to identify a stone from a photo.

  1. Step 1

    Shoot two or three angles

Front face, side angle, and a close texture shot. Works on field rocks and shop crystals. Bad photos get honest low confidence — not a lucky name.

  2. Step 2

    Read the shortlist

Top three candidates, confidence, lookalikes, and why. If the model is unsure, we say so and ask for a hardness or streak test.

  3. Step 3

    File it in your cabinet

Save the specimen, add notes, and keep it private. If you want to be found, list it on the Field board with your contact — and take it down anytime.

Field kit with rock and stone specimens and a notebook

In the app

Built for collectors who want a catalog, not a lottery.

Six rock and stone specimens arranged for comparison
Handbook of common rocks, stones, and shop crystals — filter by hardness, luster, and group.
Polished agate slice with concentric bands
Lookalike notes so agate, jasper, and chert do not collapse into one guess.
Hands holding a raw stone on granite
Optional GPS on a find. The cabinet stays private unless you list a piece on the Field board.

Honest limits

A photo is the first test, not the last.

Hardness, streak, acid, and heft still matter. RockID writes those next steps on every result so beginners learn the method, not just a name.

A specimen stays private until the owner lists it from the app — with a name and a way to reach them. They can mark Smart sell if they want to sell, and take either flag down anytime.

Smart sell is a flag only. RockID is not a marketplace, does not broker sales, does not take payment for specimens, and does not guarantee a sale, identity, or legitimate value. Buyers and sellers deal with each other.

Questions

Straight answers.

Can I identify a rock from a photo?

Yes. Photograph two or three angles of the specimen — a creek rock, garden stone, beach pebble, or shop crystal — and RockID returns a shortlist with confidence. It is a visual first pass, not a lab certificate. Confirm with hardness, streak, or heft when lookalikes remain.

What stone is this — does it work in the US and the UK?

Yes. Rockhounds in the United States and collectors in the United Kingdom use the same app. Creek and stream finds, beach pebbles, garden stones, and crystal-shop pieces are all in scope. Science names stay the same on both sides of the Atlantic.

Can I identify tumbled stones or shop crystals from a picture?

Yes. Photograph a tumbled stone, point, cluster, or shelf piece the same way you would a field find. We return the geological name. Healing copy stays optional and is never mixed into the ID.

Is there a free rock identifier app for iPhone and Android?

Yes. Download RockID from the App Store or Google Play. Three identifications every day, no card. Sign in with the same account you use on arockid.com. Plans bought in the app go through the App Store or Google Play. Plans bought here go through Stripe.

Do I need a card to try RockID?

No. Create an account and use three identifications every day. On Field, Season, or a Trail pack, choose how many IDs you need from the dropdown. Field starts at 40 IDs a month. Season starts at 80. Trail pack starts at 20 extra IDs. Nothing is unlimited.

How do I pay — website or the app?

On arockid.com you pay with Stripe (card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay). In the iOS or Android app you pay through the App Store or Google Play. Use the same account in both places. An active store plan cannot be changed on the website, and an active website plan cannot be replaced in the store until you cancel it.

How accurate is a photo ID?

Good enough to shortlist common rocks, stones, and shop crystals. Not a lab certificate or jewelry appraisal. When confidence is low we say so and list hardness, streak, acid, and heft tests — including lookalikes such as quartz versus calcite.

Can I cancel easily?

If you subscribed on arockid.com, open Account and tap Cancel plan. If you subscribed in the app, manage or cancel in App Store or Google Play subscription settings. Field and Season do not renew if you cancel before the period ends. Trail pack is one-time.

Can I show a specimen on this site?

Yes. In the app, open a cabinet piece and turn on Field board. Add a name and an email or phone. The listing appears here. Contact details are only shown to signed-in users. Guests are asked to register or log in first.

Does RockID sell rocks or guarantee a price?

No. Smart sell is a flag the owner can turn on or off. We do not take payment for specimens, broker the deal, or guarantee a sale, identity, or legitimate value. You contact the collector directly.

How do I contact RockID?

Open arockid.com/contact or email support@arockid.com. Use Contact for billing and account questions. Use Feedback if you found a bug or have an idea — signed-in notes can earn free ID credits.
