Carnelian is a warm orange to red variety of chalcedony colored mainly by iron oxides and heat. It is a common ornamental stone used for beads and cabochons.

Waxy luster, tougher feel (hardness 7), and absence of play-of-color; may show faint banding or cloudy zones rather than a glassy ‘jelly’ look.
