Heliodor is the yellow to yellow‑green gem variety of beryl, colored mainly by iron. It forms in granitic pegmatites and high‑temperature metamorphic rocks; notable sources include Brazil, Ukraine, Namibia, and Madagascar.
Look for stout hexagonal prisms with flat basal terminations and parallel striations, vitreous luster, hardness higher than quartz, and very weak basal cleavage; yellow coloration ranges from golden to greenish.
