Topaz is a hard aluminum fluoro-hydroxyl silicate that occurs in a wide color range, often enhanced by treatment. Its perfect basal cleavage and relatively high density distinguish it from many lookalike gems.
Heft feels high for size, RI around 1.62, and evidence of basal cleavage; step cuts often have clipped corners to protect the cleavage.
